Chalmers University of Technology
carries on broad-based education and research within engineering science,
natural science and architecture. Education and learning are an increasingly
important part of our existence and have now become a life-long process.
Présentation
Chalmers University
of Technology offers Ph.D and Licentiate course programmes as
well as MScEng, MArch, BScEng and nautical programmes.
The University was founded in 1829 following a donation by William
Chalmers. The first vice-chancellor of the University was Carl
Palmstedt. Chalmers became an independent foundation on July 1,
1994.
Around 10,200 people work and study at Chalmers, including more
than 8,000 undergraduates.
Each year around 250 PhD and Licentiate degrees are awarded as
well as 850 MScEng and MArch degrees.
Around 40% of Sweden's graduate engineers and architects were
educated at Chalmers.
Chalmers' turnover is approximately SEK 1.7 billion per year,
more than two-thirds of which is related to research.
Located on the Chalmers campus is Chalmers Science Park, the site
of a number of company research departments as well as various
University bodies involved in interaction with business and industry.
Several hundred so-called spin-off companies have emanated from
Chalmers and employ more than 4,000 people. The Innovation Centre
is charged with the task of promoting this particular area of
the University's operations.
Chalmers is involved in approximately 150 industrial and educational
projects within the EU.
Education
There are around 5,500 students taking MScEng and MArch programmes,
around 1,700 are on BEng and merchant marine courses and 1,000
are attending other undergraduate courses.
4.5 year MScEng programmes:
Architecture
Automation and Mechatronics Engineering, Bio Engineering, Computer
Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics,
Industrial Design Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management,
Information Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering
with Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering.
Chalmers Lindholmen University College offers BSc programmes in
Engineering 3 years in:
Building and Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical
and Electronical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering. The College also offers
Maritime BSc programmes 3-4 years in:
Marine Engineering, Nautical Science and Building Technology,
Business Development and Entrepreneurship.
Chalmers has fourteen international Master of Science programmes
run in English, each comprising 40 points and a diploma thesis.
At present 1,000 people are involved in graduate course programmes
leading to a Licentiate or PhD.

Research
Research at Chalmers ranges from mathematics and natural sciences
through to engineering, industrial sciences and community development.
At nine schools, divided into 100 departments and divisions, research
and education are conducted within natural sciences and all the
engineering science disciplines.
In addition, there is the Onsala Space Observatory. Chalmers has
some twenty scientific centres, many run jointly with Göteborg
University, as well as six national centres of excellence. These
centres are the collaborative interface between the University
and industry within the following areas of research: combustion
engines, high speed technology, high temperature corrosion, railway
mechanics, catalysis and environmental assessment of product and
material systems.
