     Description of secondary school system

Lower secondary education lasts for three years. Upper secondary education also lasts for three years and leads to the vitnemal fra denvideregaende skole. With the 1994 reform, this qualification will remain. Pupils must follow a foundation course and advanced level courses I and II or a craft or journeyman's certificate course and have a specified level of knowledge in Norwegian, English, social studies, mathematics and natural sciences/environmental studies. There are no longer separate technical schools. Tekniske Fagskoler still exist, providing more advanced technical training for those who have completed basic training and have work experience.
