Scientific and technical higher education

Principles / first cycles / second cycles / third cycles

Basic principles

Scientific University studies are open to all candidates who are Baccalauréat (or an equivalent degree) holders , whereas selection is effective in IUT (University Institutes of Technology) or in engineering programs.

Selection may occur after the first year of university studies, for example for admissions in the IUP ( University Professional Institutes).

University studies are organized in three so-called cycles.

First general cycles

First cycles last two years, leading in most cases to a DEUG ( Diplôme d'Etudes Universitaires Générales - Diploma of General University Studies).DEUG programs are defined within a national framework with majors in Maths and Pysics, Chemistry and Life science.

Short university-level technical curricula

Scientific and technical programmes within Universities

Second cycle advanced studies last two years after the first cycle leading to the degree of
- "Licence" after the first year

- "Maîtrise" after the second year

Beside traditional programmes which are generally strongly linked with a disciplin ( Physics, Maths, Mechanics, new programs have been created with a professional ambition.
The most recent are those proposed by the IUP which try to build-up in France studies very similar to undergraduate studies.

Long technical studies : the engineering programmes

Third cycles

Beside the doctorate, which has been redesigned in 1984 to match the international PhD standard, one may find a wide variety of graduate programmes which are accredited, and supervised by national technical committees. One may observe at this stage a relative continuity between pure scientific programmes and professional oriented programmes
