The IUT have been created in 1968 to train engineers assistants - so-called Techniciens Supérieurs - whose need was recognized as real by industry. The new institutions were built according to a two-year studies scheme, with a mandatory internship and a rather heavy studyload of 2000 hours.
The admission is selective, with standards varying according to the domains. A majority of candidates have a scientific baccalaureate, but the admission of students with a technical background has been encouraged.
To better match industry needs somme IUT have set up additional years of study to give a more specialized education in precise fields.
The STS - Higher technician sections have been created just after the war to give opportunities to students with a technological background to reach a higher level.
These sections follow a two-year scheme leading to a degree called the Higher Technician Certificate (BTS - Brevet de Technicien Supérieur)
